I was sent this by LH to test in return for an impartial review, so here we go. My bed gets a few visitors having been in the swinging scene for nearly two decades. And some of those make more of a ‘mess’ (in a good way of course) than others. So I’ve always had some kind of protection on my mattress to prevent any damage or stains during activities. Prior to receiving this my set up simply involved a large waterproof pet blanket under a decent waterproof mattress protector, which did the job adequately but due to the manufacture of the pet blanket it did make the occasional ‘crunchy’sound given its plastic back. It was also a pain to wash. So I was looking forward to swapping over to this one from LH, having seen many an advert for a rival brand cropping up on my social media frequently that looked great but came with a hefty price tag I couldn’t justify. When it arrived I opened the box, the usual LH branded style which is always simply functional and tasteful, to find the plastic wrapped blanket. Upon opening the bag and unfolding it I immediately had two first impressions. Firstly, I wasn’t convinced it would cover my standard double mattress. And I was right – it’s smaller so leaves a gap at the sides, depending on where you place it. And secondly, in comparison to the ads I’d seen from the rival brand, it was less ‘blanket’ like and more similar to the pet product I already had. It’s stiffer than a blanket due to its construction, not as soft as I expected although doesn’t have the crinkly sounding backing that my current set up has. It’s not itchy or scratchy by any measure, but if you’re looking for something more akin to a soft but waterproof throw, then this isn’t it. So how does it do the job intended? Very well. It got wet. Very wet. And there were no puddles formed that would leak off the sides and it absorbed the ‘moisture’ very effectively, meaning you weren’t slipping and sliding or feeling like you were getting jiggy in a paddling pool. So thumbs up there. It also washed very easily. I just popped it in the machine with the sheets and hung out to dry. No smell, no stains and it felt exactly as it did when first put on the bed. So yes, it does the job intended very well. I’d put it under a sheet as it’s not the most aesthetically pleasing thing to look at being grey, but I can’t fault it in terms of doing the job. However, I was disappointed in that I’d expected something more similar to what I’d seen from the rival. Something that could be chucked on top of the bed as and when needed that was softer to the the touch and didn’t require hiding under a sheet. All in all, it works, but given the price point I’m not sure I could justify buying one myself. If you do need some kind of protection there are cheaper alternatives (akin to my old set up) as well as others in the same price bracket that seem more like a blanket and less like a functional item. It was great to test, and I will use again. I just wish it was a little bigger, softer and a prettier colour than grey.

Now, lets be honest, when I first got this blanket out of it’s packaging I was disappointed. Velvet one side, soft fleece the other and the perfect size for a double bed? Um, no, not really. The material on each side actually feels quite nice, it’s not uncomfortable and is actually rather nice to lie upon. Velvet side up and the fleece downwards feels the best and the fleece helps keep it in place as well but it’s not what I think of as “luxury” velvet and “soft” fleece and the overall feel is not that of a soft blanket but a bit more rigid. This is my first waterproof blanket though, so perhaps, the waterproof layer means they are all like this? Size wise, perfect for a double bed? No. With my tape measure out, I make it about 150cm by 125cm which is significantly smaller than your standard double mattress and looks a little sad on our king size bed. However… it is perfect for the couch which happens to have a habit of getting, ahem, stained! So, first impressions aren’t great but how well does it work? Well hooray, this is where it greatly improves! It was tested with water based lube, copious massage oil and, ahem, sexual bodily fluids. Everything that ran onto it, was squished into it or ejaculated over it absorbed and dried very fast. We’re not into water sports, I doubt it could instantly absorb a full bladder but if they start making cloths for clearing up liquid spills out of this stuff I’m definitely getting some. It’s super absorbant and fast about it while letting nothing penetrate. Full marks there. Next was to see how much it stained and how well it washed. I was amazed when I came to wash it, having completely dried before washing there was no visible sign whatsoever of what it had been through, even the massage oil had left no mark which it certainly does on sheets and couch cushions! The only sign anything had happened was the distinctive scent left from the flavoured lube and maybe the slightest fragrance of me. It was too clean… so I thougt, screw it, lets just rub some tomato ketchup in too, why not see how it copes? Once washed (I chose an eco synthetic 20°C wash), no stains, no smell, perfect…. and softer than before. Truth to tell, it’s not had a proper testing since being washed so I’m yet to discover if it’s still totally waterproof though it faired fine against water splashes. However, I’m planning to take it as a picnic blanket to sit on at Blenheim Horse Trials next weekend if the weather is damp, so we’ll see how it does in an alternative role. It’s clearly a very versatile blanket as it has no indication or lables indicating it’s intended for sex so I’m sure will double up as a picnic blanket perfectly and noone will be any the wiser as to it’s alter occupation. Overall, I think it’s quite expensive for what it is. I would expect it to be significantly larger and maybe have a slightly more luxurious feel but it is extremely good at fulfilling it’s function and cleans up amazingly, even just left to dry without washing! I’m glad we have it, it will be used.
Spoonerism –
I’ve wanted a waterproof blanket/throw for aaaages but had always been put off by the price of the ones intended for sex. As a result I was super chuffed to be picked to review this item for Lovehoney and this is my first time using a product like it. The throw arrives in very standard Lovehoney packaging – a minimal, thin cardboard box with the product in a plastic bag. No frills, but I was expecting something a little… More, especially given its price point and being a “luxury” (emphasis on the inverted commas) product. First impressions were not great. The throw is described as being plush velvet and soft fleece. It’s not! Both sides are oddly rough and the softest bit is the trim. I am particularly sensitive to the textures of fabric and this just really gets my back up! The colour is a bit dreary too; If I was designing it I would have gone with a dark purple to match Lovehoney’s branding or at the very least black which automatically makes things look more luxurious. It also makes no secret of having a plastic lining (which is what makes it water/fluid proof) – this thing rustles like mad. It reminds me of the kind of material inflatable mattresses are made of. The only positive to the rough texture of the fabric (on the er, rougher side) is that it grips my bed sheets well and doesn’t slide around during sex. It is also a good size and more or less covers my standard double mattress. It does serve its primary function though and is most definitely waterproof. While I doubt we’ll be using this for its intended purpose (a towel is more comfortable for my skin) I have gained a well sized picnic blanket!
